Sea Witch Updates: June

Hellooooo whimsical reading and writing internet people! It’s been a WHILE, let’s catch up.

Project Sea Witch (Book 1)

For anyone who is new, my current project is a pirate fantasy trilogy, starting with Project Sea Witch which I begun writing in 2024. My fourth draft of this book is out with beta readers now!

I have recently received notes from some beta readers who have FINISHED reading my book! AHHHH!!!! I can’t lie, this has been a super stressful process, sending my book out into the world for the first time, but it has been the most rewarding thing EVER!

Upon reading the notes from my beta readers, I have begun to curate a plan for draft 5 which I will be able to start in August when I have the rest of my beta reader feedback. I am absolutely buzzing with excitement to make my fourth draft into a far more polished, succinct, and effective story with my next draft.

This book is very special to me and its been a great exercise to see how others interact with it, what comes across well, what doesn’t, and what people like or dislike or think could be better. I used to think that critique like that would hurt my feelings, but I feel so grateful for every single piece of advice I get.

Project Prophecy (Book 2)

Project Prophecy is book 2 of my fantasy trilogy, and for a while, the story had completely evaded me. I was in a very classic spot that authors find themselves in: I had plotted the story in a wider sense, begun strongly, and hit writers block around 120 pages. I knew what needed to happen, but I couldn’t find the words.

A few days ago, the words somehow began to return to me (my theory is that I needed to exorcise the writers block demon by crying a bunch about how I “can’t write anymore and maybe this author thing just isn’t for me.”) Well, I did that, and lo and behold, I could write again.

Project Prophecy is currently 167 pages long, and it’s only getting longer by the day! I may even like book 2 better than book 1, and absolutely no one is more shocked by that than I am.

Social Media

One of my goals this year was to share my art widely on social media, wether that be book stuff, visual arts, or just generally sharing a bit more of myself online in hopes of finding a like minded community.

So far, this goal has been going well. Though I’ve been on TikTok most, Youtube has been a really fun adventure for me. I recently uploaded a video all about the concept of Creative Fulfillment and how to find the bravery to chase your creative goals. I am very proud of that video and I would encourage any creative person to watch! (Linked below)

Art

This past month I made two art pieces to depict the imagery in my book, and both of them happen to be of the same character, Caspia.

Caspia is the main female character in my trilogy. She is a siren with the power of transformation, who harbours a deep curiosity about the human world. Because of this, Caspia feels different than the rest of the sirens on her reef, and she finds herself entangled with humans after wandering from the beach into the Kingdom on one fateful night.

My first piece is a digital artwork of Caspia underwater. I made this in procreate on my iPad.

The second piece is a watercolour image of Caspia when she wanders into town and partakes in Emberlenda, the festival of fires. This image is from the perspective of the main male character in my book, Julian, who spots Caspia by the fire and is taken by her beauty.
